Prepurchase Exams : Our Doctors
perform comprehensive prepurchase exams with the
capability of digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy
and in house lab work for health screens and coggins
testing. We strive to schedule and report our exams in a
timely manner to benefit both buyer and seller. Breeding
soundness exams are also performed on request including
ultrasound, uterine culture, uterine biopsy and rectal
palpation by experienced clinicians.Advanced
Equine Dentistry: All of
our Doctors have participated in continuing education in
the field of Equine Dentistry and have made a commitment
to perform quality dental services as part of our
comprehensive program in preventative medicine. We
recommend dentistry for horses just prior to starting any
training program that will introduce a bit in the mouth.
The young horse should have wolf teeth removed and sharp
enamel points ground down. Deciduous caps (shedding baby
teeth) and deciduous incisors (front baby teeth) should be
removed at this time. Older horses should be checked every
six months to see if dentistry is needed, and typically
once performed should be re done every 12 to 18 months
depending on the horse. We use the latest in power
dentistry equipment and pain management to keep the horse
as comfortable as possible during and after the procedure.
We believe that dentistry is one of the most important
veterinary services we can provide.
Lameness
Exam: The
diagnosis and treatment of lameness constitutes a large
part of our practice involving horses of all disciplines
including hunter/ jumpers, dressage, gaited, Thoroughbred
and Quarter Horse racing, English and Western pleasure,
roping, gymkhana, and barrel racing. Our Doctors are
proficient in regional blocks, joint blocks and injection,
and the use of newer treatment options such as bone
marrow, PRP, and IRAP injections. We utilize digital
radiography and ultrasound to allow diagnosis and
treatment, often in the same visit. We will work with your
farrier to optimize the care of your horses hooves thru
cooperative efforts. We are happy to tackle those
difficult cases in a timely manner.
IRAP
(interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein):
Another development in the area of joint treatment
is IRAP therapy. It has been available for several years
and the reports of success are very exciting. IRAP uses the patients’ own processed blood for
injection, making it extremely safe for the animal. Basically,
Interleukin-1 must match up perfectly with receptor sites
in the joint to start an inflammation process. IRAP fits
into these receptor sites and blocks them so the
inflammation is stopped before it gets started. Gene therapy
will play an important role in the future of medicine, and
Creekside will continue to provide the latest in
procedures and information to our patients.
Digital
Radiography:
X-ray technology has been used for decades with few improvements
until the introduction of digital radiography. With the
“D-R” we are able to view images immediately
and manipulate them for maximum clarity. For ambulatory
care this is a major benefit. No more trips to the office
to process films only to find they are not of usable quality.
Also, we are able to share the results with other facilities,
such as an equine hospital, quickly and effectively. Our
clients who have had occasion to use radiology recently
appreciate the advantages that digital imaging offers.
Platelet-Rich
Plasma (PRP):
Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy supports the treatment of
tendon and ligament problems. PRP is a by-product of the
patient’s own blood which has been through special
centrifugation and preparation. This process eliminates
the possibility of rejection or disease transmission from
a foreign source. PRP helps repair an injury at the cellular
level and new studies indicate it may also reduce the
incidence of re-injury. Standard treatments including
bandaging, meds, and rehabilitative exercise are still
valuable, but many times cannot repair the tendon or ligament.
With PRP we hope to get closer to this goal. Creekside
has the equipment on hand to prepare PRP in the field,
and our doctors are using these injections to successfully
treat patients soft tissue problems.
